How to Enter

Who Can Enter

We welcome entries from all interested parties. Both individuals and teams are encouraged to enter. We are especially interested in ideas from unconventional street designers, including students from all grades (K-12), community groups, block associations and artists.

Registration Process

Participants must register and pay the submission fee prior to submitting an entry to Designing the 21st Century Street. The deadline to register and pay the submission fee for the competition is July 31st, 2008. The deadline for submitting entries is September 2, 2008 at 10 PM EST. Contestants will not be allowed to submit entries until payment has been processed.

September 2, 2008 at 10 PM EDT - Deadline for submission of entries
September 2008 - Jury deliberation
November 2008 - Competition winners announced
December 9, 2008 - Exhibition opening at Galapagos Art Space (Brooklyn, NY)

Entrance Fees

Each entry costs $30 to be processed through Paypal. Special scholarship rates are available for non-profits and students. Please inquire at contact [at] 21stcenturystreet [dot] org to see if you are eligible.

Up to 5 entries may be submitted under each registration. This is to allow purchase of multiple entries on behalf of individuals or teams by a sponsor or parent organization. All entries will be credited to individuals or teams specified on submission form.

All payments are final.

Submission Requirements

Participants must submit competition materials through the submission form on 21stcenturystreet.org. Each submission must include:

Written Statement: Up to 500 words describing your submission
Images: A maximum of 7 images: 1 site plan, 1 section, 1 perspective and up to 4 optional supporting images of your choice. Image format must be .jpg, .png, .gif, or .bmp with 300 DPI and maximum dimensions of 4,000 x 4,000 pixels and should not exceed 8 MB. Contestants will be asked to prepare images in higher resolution for the public exhibition later this Fall.

Image definitions:

Site plan - A line drawing describing the arrangement, layout and design of proposed use from an aerial view. It should include an outline of all structures and site improvements, such as landscaping and travel lanes.

Section – A view of the site plan cut on a vertical plane that will reveal elevation (height relationships between different objects).

Perspective – A view of the improvements representing three-dimensional objects and depth relationships. See Wikipedia for an example.

Other Requirements

Submissions should stay within the boundaries defined: 3rd Ave between 8th and 10th St; 8th St between 3rd and 5th Ave; 5th Ave between 8th and 10th St; 10th St between 3rd and 5th Ave.

All competition materials will be reviewed anonymously and must be submitted without any writing, insignia, marks or logos that identify the participant. Entries which contain any such markings will not be reviewed by the jury.

Participants may submit as many entries as they desire. Only one entry may be submitted per submission form and submission fee. Up to 5 entries may be submitted under each registration.

Prizes will be awarded to the individuals or teams specified on each entry submission form. Please be prepared to include applicable names and contact information.

Eligibility

The competition is open to anyone not specifically excluded. Exclusions: Jurors and staff members of Transportation Alternatives are enjoined from participating in the competition.

Exhibition and Publication

Transportation Alternatives will exhibit a selection of competition entries, including all award-winners, in a public exhibit in December 2008. Entries will be printed on 36” x 48”, horizontally oriented, presentation boards. Transportation Alternatives will publish a selection of competition entries in a printed publication, and all entries on the website.

Ownership and Copyright

All materials submitted to the Designing the 21st Century Street competition become the property of Transportation Alternatives. Materials may be retained for archival purposes, exhibition, publication, and promotion. Each contestant will retain full copyright of all materials unless otherwise assigned.
