Mode Share
Mode share proposes shifting the typical modal hierarchy of a dense urban area through interventions that repurpose the expanses of asphalt that are 9th Street and 4th Avenue in a manner that promotes the health, safety and welfare of pedestrians, cyclists, transit users as well as drivers. Working within the existing curb to curb width of each street, the Mode Share design rearranges the nature of the streetscape by providing physical spaces where all modes of movement can successfully operate and coexist in close physical proximity. The size and speed of the corridor has been also been recalibrated to a pedestrian pace by shortening distances across streets, changing materials and textures on the ground plane, incorporating better and varied lighting to enhance visibility, rearranging parking strategies, adding landscape buffering along travel lanes and providing additional opportunities for safe crossings. As summarized below, Mode Share brings the resizes the horizontal and vertical realm of this intersection to a safe, functional and artful condition.
