The first action is to gain space from the road but paying attention to the involving repercussions of this fact. This project provides a common Boulevard solution in a new way.
The curve allows to take control of the space in a new way. The unconscious result is a traffic calming down reaction as the driver tends to pay more attention to the shape of the road..
As it is constrained inside a straight street, the new generated spaces allows you to put in order in different ways: acces road, bike lanes, playgrounds, gardens,..., depending on the necessities of every street as every street has its own necessities.
This flexibility allows you to export the projected plan to other streets of downtown brooklyn following with the suggested definition of streets depending on their use: travel streets or living streets. These definitions have a translated meaning on travel speeds and in the way that people acces to the street. In this project the space underneath the subway platform and surrroinding the intersection works like a transportation hub as it can contain acces points to whatever else form of city transportation: bike, bus, subway or car (taking profit of non-used dependencies for bike or car parking lots). So, the travel street has become a door. In these way the driver tends to believe he is entering a new place and makes an “unconscious” traffic calming down fact.
In the project, 4th street can lodge two lanes for car and an auxiliar lane for low time parking or bus stops. The rest is a pedestrian realm. The subway vent conflict over the projected center median is resolved by wind-energy collectors.
For living streets more flexibility is needed as they can include residentials or commercials places. These usages need slower speeds.
In the project 9th street has a wider space for the pedestrian realm. In some cases where residential usages requires an exta vehicle lane, an acces road is projected. In the others, all this new gained space can be used for living practices like playing, relaxing, walking, meeting, shopping, working, or contemplating an sculpture
For security purposes on both streets bike lanes are contained over the pedestrian realms separated from the sidewalks by discontinued benches.
Security is also enforced by discouraging jaywalking elements like benches, curbs and bulbs.
In this project new designed furniture elements have been made in accordance with the aesthetic criteria of the author, approaching to a new identity for the new localized brooklyn hubs.
These localized hubs projected all over downton Brooklyn, a wide network of transportation hubs, can fit very well on the NYC city plans for the categorized streets and serve perfectly for the purposes of the new green transpotation hierarchy.
