Two trees: one built, one grown. Embedding the street with life.

The trees, artificial and living, cultivate a fresh street experience for the community through the evolution of form and space.

The framing tree is the structure for the encouragement and interruption of growth; it is there to support the juvenile living tree and to impede the growing traffic flow of the community street. The framing tree is made of components that are clad on a frame creating the silhouette of a mature tree. It becomes the symbol of the future living tree as well as a warning to drivers of the impending restrictions on the flow of traffic. Components of the framing tree that are not permanently enveloped within the living tree are able to be used elsewhere, thus ingraining the nature of the tree within the social context of Brooklyn. The framing tree initialises the space, readying the community and commuters for the change that will come with the living tree.

The living tree grows to replace the framing tree, to create a new space and street, a space for people to inhabit, to appropriate, a space where community is prioritised and where vehicles are foreign.
The living tree is planted at the base of the framing tree, growing up to meet the form. It entwines around it and manipulates the framing tree, shifting components and interweaving with the structure. Eventually outgrowing the framing tree, the living tree becomes the dominant element of the streetscape. A street that is now a green canopy and breathing space for the community.
