In an effort to redefine the street space, we first looked at the road. Each road became one-way, and curves to cut down on speed. The bike lane runs next to the road, but is elevated and separated by our water filtration and drainage system. The pedestrian space is the dominant area of the design; it is the highest level, and largest spatially. At the intersection, bikes and cars enter the pedestrian realm, and must cross with caution: opposite of the current situation in which pedestrians step down into automobile realm.
Different types of pavers help filter water runoff, purify the air from pollution, and define spaces within the street. Raised urban farming plots, urban gardens, seating, and bicycle racks dominate the landscape, while still leaving plenty of space for pedestrians to move freely. Solar lights add to the atmosphere, and at the intersection clearly describe right-of-way. In-ground solar panels generate electricity for the street, while shade trees everywhere cool the street, and counteract the heat island effect. A Recycling Center is a prominent fixture on the street, and community spaces dot the new urban landscape.
The street is the new hub for this neighborhood, especially during nice weather. As I walk down the street to recycle and compost my waste, I see my neighbors attending their personal urban farming plots. My friend's children are safely playing on grass. An old friend is reading on a bench while her husband chats nearby to another person gardening. A yoga class has found space on another patch of grass, and I can see my upstairs neighbor basking in a spot of sunlight way underground while she waits for the subway. The proprietor at my favorite cheese shop whizzes by on his bike shouting a greeting, and the cars creep, always wary of those around them. I can't believe this is on the same Brooklyn corner I've lived for the last 12 years. It's light years away.
