Written Statement

Communiscape defines a new vision of the relationship between the streetscape and community and embarks on a new approach to the design of streets in New York City in the 21st Century. It includes all of the elements that the intersection of 4th Avenue and 9th Street needs to ensure a vibrant neighborhood and serve the present and future needs of the Park Slope community.

Communiscape is based on three core principles: Community, Communication and Common-Sense Design. Community is perhaps the most important element in an urban environment streetscape; the street is where kids play, people gather
after a church or neighborhood event, people commute to work, neighbors discuss local happenings, and people buy local produce.

Communication among pedestrians and cyclists and transit users is a defining aspect of the Communiscape. Knowing where you are and where you can go gives identity to a place. Neighborhood and overall public communication is done through signage and art. For example, wayfinding signage lets one know when the next subway or BRT will arrive or how long it will take them to walk to Gowanus Canal. Neighborhood signage and art proudly displays the neighborhood's culture, talent, and local events.

In the 21st century, sustainable and green design should be considered Common-Sense Design. Materials and services such as pervious paving, trees and shrubs, solar and wind powered lighting, and efficient public transportation are common-sense strategies to reduce stormwater and street maintenance, heating and cooling loads, electricity needs, and the space needed for single use vehicles.
