Written Statement:

Thrust skyward
From the dark depths of undergroundness
To sudden brightness
And a view of the city all around.

This is the F train journey from Manhattan
As it bursts into light just after Carroll Street station
In Brooklyn.

Supported by a massive industrial era black steel trestle
The train barrels on
Veering left
Providing a flyover glimpse of the city towers behind
Industrial landscape and maritime waterfront below
And a seemingly lush, low slung verdancy approaching.

Next stop, Ninth Street and Fourth Avenue:
A city crossroads, a portal to Gowanus-Park Slope.
Off the train, down the steps, onto the sidewalk, then the bike.

This could be anywhere.

And then the potential…
Let’s go.

Witness the majesty of the otherworldly industrial Gowanus canal environs.
The back gearing tanker trucks and cement mixers.
The beautiful horror of marbleized liquid slick below.
Is it moving? Yes, and somehow soothing to witness,
Yet disturbing to the core.
Then, bucolic Prospect Park,
Its nature, fingering down the Park Slope streets.
A Perch coffee at 5th and 5th
Good and strong.
