Written Statement

The street of the 21st century is a street that belongs to the citizens of the city. More than a blanket of asphalt, layered culturally, spatially and programatically, it is the tartan arteries through which the many lives of the city flow. Citizens in motion cycle the suspended path alongside new landscaping, descend into a subterranean platform and performance arena to catch a show or a train, amble along the buffered sidewalk, traverse safely on a raised cycling path, or coast by above on a train headed for another destination. The bike path, cut into the surface, runs continuously along the length of the street for where the subway line exists under the street, exposing the train tunnel to the surface and the street's activity.

The city is in it's streets, and in the 21st century, these streets transform to better meet the needs of the citizens. The surface of the formerly dominant ground plane has been cut to expose the invisible workings below, symbolically creating transparency to the machines of the city's operation and drawing precious light and air into the train tunnel. For those unable to use the stairs to reach the train platform, elevators have been provided. Pedestrians, cyclists, train passengers and motorists have visual access to each of the other modes of transportation, raising awareness of the variety of transportation options available, and promoting safety for all.
