Street is a representative public space. All of them are already filled with different function, users and facilities. Streets of our city are on the saturated status. We were required to reverse existing hierarchy on the street. From ‘cars:bikes:pedestrians’ to ‘pedestrians:bikes:cars’. The middle status of this feudalistic street is ‘bikes’. Actually it has the key because it can effect on both cars and pedestrians by reducing car users. Reducing car users can result in reducing car lanes and it is same meaning of the possibility that more space of the street could be provided to pedestrians; green spaces, cultural spaces and sufficient buffer areas. Defining a bikeway is the first moment to break existing saturated situation in the street.
A. Definition of separated bikeway
Existing system of the bikeway is not efficient to bike users and pedestrians. Because of cars under the side-parking, it doesn’t have its own area. Locate the bike way on the middle of the car lanes separated from pedestrians. Bikes are also dangerous for pedestrians.
B. Existing side parking area – parking both of cars and greens
Side parking area will be remained in necessary points for not disturbing the circulation between human and cars. Except for distributed area for parking, the other space will be filled with green spaces which has dimension with one car. This ‘parked green space’ is the extension of the public activities on the street and moreover, it can prevent disordered packed -parking between cars. All day parking system will be prohibited. We remember smile of neighbors on the ‘parking day’.
C. Islands between cars
From the establishing bike lanes in the middle of car lanes, from 4 to 8 lanes streets become to have islands. It can provide comfortable space to pedestrians to take a moment when they can’t pass through the street within a controlled time. Moreover this green space will reduce the distance between two neighbors separated by streets. Bus stations will also place in the islands.
D. Delicious walking through an urban scramble
In the intersection, there will be an ‘all stop sign’ to cars from 4 different directions. It allows the crosswalk way to become a more efficient and vivid space. Pedestrians can go to any directions at one time sign. Passing through the transient public space, neighbors can say hello each other. The left turn is replaced to the U-turn in front of the next intersections. This will cause drivers to reduce their speed in front of each intersection.
E. Bike express way and stations
Historically, 4th Ave was established in order to connect neighbors in Brooklyn. Because it meets the street frequently, bike users should go through the street often. It is not efficient for bike users and moreover for pedestrians because sometimes bike users go through the street with pedestrians at the same time. Like the NYC subway system, we propose the bike express way lifted above the side parking area. The station above the intersection can be the connection between ground level and express way level. Bike-sharing system like Paris will be installed in each station. This system will increase bike users in Brooklyn. The structures have the green concept such as rain water collectors for feeding trees, solar collectors for electronic energy and sprinkler for reducing temperature of the street in the summer. LED on the surface with signals will make drivers recognize the intersection among the skewed vision corridor due to sloped geography.
