There are two parts to this proposal.
1. A seating system which doubles as traffic-calming rumble strips.
2. An urban herb garden installed on the median strip of 4th Avenue.
1. Steel tubes form rumble strips fitted into pre-concrete elements.
During festivals or the weekend, the rumble strips fold up to form a seating structure. The final part of this structure is a hard-wearing plastic moulded seat, which is owned by individual residents and brought from home when a performance or movie is being shown with the railway bridge as a backdrop.
2. The urban herb and vegetable garden consists of a sort of cowl, which fits over the existing subway grille. Warm air driven up by trains passing below is used
to guard against frost in Winter.
Both of these offer the residents a greater sense of control and ownership over their neighbourhood.
